Insurance for Guild Members
We have now received the application form for members to apply for insurance. Once we are at the 150 member level with insurance our rates will drop. As it is the cost is about $650/year and they will accept monthly payments.
Re: Insurance for Guild Members
That's still a good deal... $450 lower than what I was quoted from my ins company. I hope more people join.
Do you have any idea what membership fees will be? Can hobbyists like me upgrade to insured membership if/when I decide to start selling?
Thanks

Hi there Islandsoaper!
That was a great question.
There will definitely be levels in our membership structure to accommodate hobbyists, sellers, and suppliers

If it's not out of line to ask, what company has given the quote on the insurance?

Re: Insurance for Guild Members
This is great! I have been quoted $627 yr through Ing in Alberta, which I didn't think was too bad. However if the Guild members can benefit if I join then I will!

Re: Insurance for Guild Members
'Nother question (I'm full of them yanno! )...
Are there any restrictions as to sales volume, products insured, online sales, or activities done? I'm thinking of candles (some insurers won't do candles), sales out of country, workshops or teaching, and sales over 5000/year.
Reason I ask, is that this has been brought up on another forum and the answers are all over the place.
I have an insurer right now and the cost is similar to what this policy costs and there are few restrictions (only a couple), so I'm curious as to how they would compare.

Hi Meli,
Depending on what your international sales are will determine if there are any extra charges. I am with them already and I sell mostly Canada but I am also in the USA, Australia and Europe without any problems. Internet sales are included in policy. Once we're fully up and running you'll be able to compare them head to head and see how they line up for you.
Cheers

My current coverage is through Canfinse - Aviva. I'm quite happy with them, but if something better came along I would change.

I am with Peace Hills, and they are insuring me for around 540.00 per year. Not selling outside of Canada though.

YatYat - I find that really,, really strange since I'm with cooperators, insured for out of country sales as well as internet & I'm paying less that $700/year

that sucks (i mean my situation). i tried aviva thru an agent here but it was a no go. i wonder if its a matter of different persons giving out different quotes. i am insured for internet sales but only canadian. just before i renewed in feb, i asked how about US sales (only US) and was told it would be over $400 more and then they made me put a thing on the website saying i can only ship within canada. i wonder if there is any difference between our policies ...
so you don't really save that much with the group insurance then?

Re: Insurance for Guild Members
Aviva has a special policy for jewellry and other crafters. You have to contact Kim Libienstein directly, because as far as I know it's not listed on their site (or wasn't when I looked last).
I just looked back in my info and it is called:
THE CRAFTS, ARTISANS AND JEWELLERS INSURANCE PROGRAM
Kim is always happy to answer questions, though it may take a couple of days for him to get back to you. The policy renews at the end of July every year, so if you take it on during the year, there are different pro-rated fees you'd pay. It sounds like you might be due a rebate.

I'm with the same one as Meli. Cooperaters here would not touch me after I jumped through a tonne of hoops. With Canfise you fill out a form send it in and are done. It is only good for Canada though.

Thanks Meli. Are you covered for international or US sales? I am going to wait and see what we get with the guild group insurance because it will be easy to switch within the cooperators but if it doesn't work out, i will definitely try kim.

I'm not at home, so I'll check later. I don't have a website up and running as such at this time, and I don't have a spot on Etsy or Artfire or anywhere else; most of my sales are in Canada, but I have had followup sales from people who have purchased from me in person and then ordered more when they got back home to the US.

Re: Insurance for Guild Members
I wonder if it is the different branches and how it is being presented for the Cooperators? I am fully covered for liability and loss of equipment/materials. My liability covers Canada and international.
Let me check with my agent and find out why you are being turned down. It could be how it is being presented, as it has to go through as Commercial Liability Insurance. My understanding is that since there is a risk of harm from use of product other craft insurance doesn't cover it, nor will your home insurance.
